<p>The movie that made the phrase "I'm Mad as Hell and I'm Not Going to Take it Anymore!!" part of the American experience reminds us in 2012 that music, film, and design must continue to strive for the freedom ideals of the American dream.</p>

<p>Daylighting is one of the most important aspects to any room's design.&nbsp; Natural light is beneficial to our physical and mental health, and&nbsp;also a powerful mood booster.&nbsp; Sometimes, however, utilizing natural light was just not feasible.&nbsp; Skylights can be rather cumbersome when it comes to interior roof lines, shading, leaking, and glare.&nbsp;&nbsp; The answer to all of these issues is the light tube.&nbsp; This tube of reflectant material connects the daylight hitting the dome mounted on the roof, via&nbsp;refraction and mirrors inside the tube,&nbsp;to the ceiling.&nbsp; Perfect for introducing daylight into bathrooms and closets (never will you step outside and realize you don't match again!)&nbsp; Just another little tip from DCR Interiors&nbsp;to make your home or office more functional, energy efficient, and <a href="http://www.dcrinteriors.com/contact/">enjoyable</a>!</p>

<p>&nbsp;Hi all! I&rsquo;m Jennifer and I write for&nbsp;<a title="Home Decor and Accessories" href="http://www.arcadianhomedecor.com" target="_blank">Arcadian Home Decor</a>, a site that chronicles home decor trends around the world.&nbsp;I've been writing about home decor since graduating university and have loved it ever since. I'm addicted to patterned fabrics, Jonathan Adler, chaise lounges, old doors, milk glass jars, antiques, and chandeliers. The reason I'm a fan of <strong>DCR Interiors</strong> is because they're experts - what's better than perusing inspirational posts with advice straight from professionals? I may not be a professional, but I know a great room when I see one, and I'm excited to share some of them with you here.</p>
<p>Great rooms are multi-functional spaces in a home that are usually occupied by a living room, dining room and kitchen (or other fun zones like game rooms). Spacious and uncluttered, every detail in a great room counts, from the furniture right down to the <strong><a title="Table Decor" href="http://www.arcadianhomedecor.com/table-decor-table-decorations.html" target="_blank">table decor</a></strong>. Here are eight beautiful great rooms to inspire and impress. <em>Marvelously modest</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6187" title="1 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/1-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Rooms" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>While this may be a smaller great room, there's no shortage of style and function here -- two back-to-back sitting areas and a bevy of beautiful antiques make this an ideal place to relax, read, entertain, and more. <em>Shabby chic</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6216" title="2 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/2-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>The high ceilings and antique armoire lend a rustic edge to this space, while the modern light fixtures and <a title="Wall Decor" href="http://www.arcadianhomedecor.com/wall-art-wall-decor.html" target="_blank">wall decor</a> break up all that magnificent white. <em>Inside and out</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6217" title="3 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/3-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>This great room is especially exceptional, with a completely open-air dining room, comfortable living and dining areas decked out in wicker furniture, and beautiful exposed ceiling beams. <em>Provence panache</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6218" title="4 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/4-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #888888;">Home Bunch <a href="http://www.homebunch.com/wp-content/uploads/Ranch16GreatRoom.jpg" target="_blank"><span style="color: #888888;">via</span></a></span></p>
<p>A massive stone fireplace takes center stage in this great room, and is surrounded by an eclectic array of chairs and sofas - the adjoining kitchen is also positioned to take full advantage of the roaring hearth. <em>Family-friendly</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6219" title="5 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/5-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>The layout of this great room is particularly interesting as it gives the illusion of winding through the main floor of this traditional home. However, the horizontal ceiling beams give the space flow and direction. <em>A room with a view</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6220" title="6 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/6-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>And what a view it is! A seaside Hampton home with mammoth windows captures the impressive sights, while wide archways and an exposed second floor give the entire house an airy feel. <em>Whimsy and charm</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6221" title="7 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/7-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>With a kitchen just on the other side, this great room opens out onto sprawling hills and brings the beauty of outside in. The circle <strong><a title="Wall Art" href="http://www.arcadianhomedecor.com/wall-art-wall-decor.html" target="_blank">wall art</a></strong> along with the polka-dot furniture give the space some playfulness. <em>Lovely and lakeside</em> <img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-6222" title="8 Great Room" src="http://blog.arcadianhomedecor.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/8-Great-Room.jpg" alt="Great Room" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>Granite counter tops, all the rage for now more than a decade, have quite an interesting back story.&nbsp; Although the beauty of nature is evoked by the delicate swirls and unique patterns in Granite, the process behind&nbsp;getting the&nbsp;igneous rock out of the ground, and on your counter top is far from environmentally&nbsp;friendly.&nbsp; According to <a href="http://www.treehugger.com/files/2011/08/how-did-granite-become-the-kitchen-counter-standard.php">treehugger.com</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">But granite is found all over the world, and it is cheaper to dig it out in India and Brazil. The environmental standards are not quite as high either; in the Bangalore district, one study shows that 16% of the workers have dust an water related diseases like tuberculosis, and the air surrounding quarries is hazy with dust. But the local real estate is cheap, as is labour. (more at the<a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6233697.stm">BBC</a>)</p>

The curved arm allows the light to be directed to different areas in a room-- some are even suitable for ambient lighting, while others are best suited to accent lighting.  Add brightness and beauty to your home with any of these lovely arc <a title="Floor Lamps" href="http://www.arcadianlighting.com/floor-lamps.html">floor lamps</a>.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-8355 aligncenter" title="1 Arc Floor Lamps" src="http://blog.arcadianlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/1-Arc-Floor-Lamps.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="475" /></p>

The Arc Floor Lamp by George Kovacs is a sophisticated solution to your floor lamp needs.  It has a small arc and is finished in a polished chrome and would provide just the right amount of accent light for reading or working.  It looks absolutely lovely in this contemporary living room accented with polished silver finishes.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-8356 aligncenter" title="2 Arc Floor Lamps" src="http://blog.arcadianlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2-Arc-Floor-Lamps.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="600" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #888888;">CB2 (<a href="http://images.cb2.com/is/image/CB2/doubledeckerbedfreshinkSC11?&amp;$web_zoom$&amp;wid=337&amp;hei=337" target="_blank">via</a>)</span></p>
The Lantern Arc Floor Lamp, available at CB2, is chic and affordable.   Painted in glossy red lacquer finish, it adds a nice pop of color to this black and white bedroom.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-8357 aligncenter" title="3 Arc Floor Lamps" src="http://blog.arcadianlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/3-Arc-Floor-Lamps.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="600" /></p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #888888;">CB2 (<a href="http://images.cb2.com/is/image/CB2/shaggyleisurepkbnstngRXSC11?&amp;$web_zoom$&amp;wid=337&amp;hei=337" target="_blank">via</a>)</span></p>
The Big Apple Dipper Lamp, also from CB2, is a great find for those who want a smaller arc with a simpler base.  This lamp would be perfect for accent lighting in a living room for reading a book.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-8358 aligncenter" title="4 Arc Floor Lamps" src="http://blog.arcadianlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/4-Arc-Floor-Lamps.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="374" /></p>

Love the retro feel of this living room.  It's accented by a polished silver arc <a title="Floor Lamps" href="http://www.arcadianlighting.com/floor-lamps.html"><strong>floor lamp</strong></a> that extends into the space, providing ambient light.
<p style="text-align: center;"><img class="size-full wp-image-8359 aligncenter" title="5 Arc Floor Lamps" src="http://blog.arcadianlighting.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/5-Arc-Floor-Lamps.jpg" alt="" width="600" height="422" /></p>

A white Arco Floor lamp adds to the retro feel of this pretty living room.  The Arco Floor Lamp is one of the most popular mid-century modern floor lamps available. With a gorgeous marble base, the lamp's beautifully curved arm extends 8 feet into a space, providing a beautiful area and ambient light.

The beauty of an arc floor lamp is that, depending on your lighting and space needs, you can find one that fits your space perfectly.  If you're short on space, look for a lamp that has a shorter slighter arc.  Likewise, if you have plenty of space and want more ambient light, find one that's taller and has a greater arc.  Either way, you will be sure to find a chic way to brighten your home!

<p>The city that gave us such historic greats as Andrew Carnegie and&nbsp;Andy Warhol, is ready to give birth to another worldwide phenomenon.&nbsp; Pittsburgh will unveil The Tower at PNC Plaza in 2015, planned to be the most sustainable skyscraper in the world with a LEED Platinum status.&nbsp; PNC Financial services group will build the 800,000 square foot structure on the same intersection PNC has had their headquarters for more than 150 years.&nbsp; Currently PNC has&nbsp;more LEED Certified buildings than any company on earth.&nbsp; The Tower at PNC Plaza, at an estimated cost of 400 million dollars, will be approximately 40 stories tall.</p>
<p><span class="full-image-block ssNonEditable"><span><img src="http://www.dcrinteriors.com/storage/The_tower_PNC_Plaza.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1312147043711" alt="" /></span></span></p>
<p>Some of the sustainable solutions plan include:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The Tower will feature a double glass facade to enhance energy efficiency by reducing cooling costs and allowing natural airflow to the building. Using advanced sensors and metering, a state-of-the-art, high-efficiency heating and cooling system will deliver conditioned air to specific zones of the building, as needed. The building will be oriented to take advantage of sunlight in workspaces, reducing the need for artificial light during the day.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">The design team is exploring fuel cells, solar panels, geothermal systems and other alternative power generation sources that will significantly reduce carbon emissions. The building&rsquo;s green rooftops will collect rainwater and channel it for use in other parts of the structure, as well as reduce the heat gain associated with traditional rooftops. - <a href="http://www.usbuildingdigest.com/go-green/pittsburgh-skyscraper-to-be-greenest-in-the-world">US Building Digest</a></p>

<p>This ambitious, yet timely undertaking blends well with Pittsburgh, a city known&nbsp;for classics like Falling Water and&nbsp;Kentuck Knob by Frank Lloyd Wright,&nbsp;PPG Place&nbsp;by architect&nbsp;Phillip Johnson, and even an Incline Plane (not to be confused with the <a href="http://www.inclinedplane.org/">World's Steepest Vehicular Incline Plane</a> in Johnstown, PA.)</p>
