Looks can be deceiving. Taking solely one look at the Flow Lounger from a front angle, and one may envision a boxy, and uncomfortable seat. A glance from the side view, however, clearly shows an ergonomic attitude, with plenty of flexible support. Angular and masculine, the Flow Lounger is among many favored pieces designed by Jacob Marks, of Scram furniture. This North Carolina company is dedicated to "distinctive design, authentic materials, and sustainable practices." Their collection can be found at http://wwww.skram.com.

The Launch Pad
Friday, May 30, 2008 at 06:41PM DCR Interiors has submitted its own humble abode for the Business Week Home Office contest, and thought it appropriate to highlight some of the function and design a small space can embrace.

The Foyer
Drama, otherwise known as the “Wow Factor,” should be incorporated into the foyer, or the space one is in when he immediately enters the home. This was achieved with a unique pendant light illuminating this high traffic area, and creating visual interest.
An octagon mirror, very similar to a Feng Shui Ba-Gua, was hung in the same entranceway. The beveled edges highlight the custom chandelier and start the airy, reflective and transparent styling of the space.
Art Deco Chairs
The pair of Art Deco styled chairs are the perfect size and weight for a variety of uses. For a casual gathering, these chairs can be placed against the wall. When DCR Interiors hosts a client in-house, these chairs convert into client seating for two. By incorporating a fun damask print on the backs of the chairs an element of surprise and interest is infused from every angle, a key element in a small space.

The Desk
An L-Shaped Glass desk was chosen as the primary furniture fixture in the room. Its large surface area enables an uncramped work area, while its transparency fools the eye into making it appear less massive. The right angle of the desk is hinged so that the desk can morph to a long I shaped console table for serving, or into an acute angle allowing more flexibility. An Eames styled desk chair brings classic contemporary flair into the space, complementing the contemporary stylings of the desk.

Color
To create depth in this small space the wall opposite the entrance was picked as an accent wall. A subtle and muted grayish-blue was chosen to accent the existing carpet and not overwhelm the room. By taking the color up only to the crown molding, the arched ceiling is highlighted. Cream was chosen as the accent color to continue the light and airy theme. Black is used minimally to ground certain elements, such as the Art Deco chairs. This color palette is very versatile, lending itself to a variety of accent colors. Vivid colors can be incorporated into accessories, such as a flower arrangement, to keep the space fresh.
Architectural Details
The Launch Pad is located in an old hotel, converted into individual residential units. The architectural details are charming, and deserved to be enhanced. To create a romantic and calming feel, balloon shades were chosen for the window treatments. These fixed shades allow ample sunlight to illuminate the room, yet provide privacy. The original hardware of the building was the inspiration for the transparent crystal styling, and so matching finials and knobs were used to carry this theme. The unique double doors were accentuated using the color palette.

Storage
Storage is always an issue in a small space, especially in an office. A floating shelf was installed underneath the double window to utilize this valuable space. A cream cubical bookcase was chosen for its versatility, as one can add boxes for unsightly items, or leave the shelf as is to showcase decorative accessories.

Edwardian Chairs
These chairs are full of character and the traditional styling they add to the space was needed to enhance the age of the building. Painted cream to make them appear less heavy, they are on casters allowing necessary mobility. Matching blue upholstery was used on the Edwardian chairs to make them appear smaller.
