NETWORK @ The Next Cool Event!!!

Celebrating all there is to be MAD about, we present to you our exhibition for the 2012 Next Cool Event: NETWORK!!!

The movie that made the phrase "I'm Mad as Hell and I'm Not Going to Take it Anymore!!" part of the American experience reminds us in 2012 that music, film, and design must continue to strive for the freedom ideals of the American dream.

With this exhibit, we challenge our guests to engage in the conversation for the solutions we need in 2012.  Through design we will explore consumerism, sustainability, freedom of speech, alternate realities, patriotism, and technology.  Our friends ACB Designs and artist Meclina Gomes-Priestley lend their talents to create a thought-provoking, interactive time capsule for modern America.

Step up and tell us what you're 'MAD AS HELL' about!

Light at the End of the Tube

Daylighting is one of the most important aspects to any room's design.  Natural light is beneficial to our physical and mental health, and also a powerful mood booster.  Sometimes, however, utilizing natural light was just not feasible.  Skylights can be rather cumbersome when it comes to interior roof lines, shading, leaking, and glare.   The answer to all of these issues is the light tube.  This tube of reflectant material connects the daylight hitting the dome mounted on the roof, via refraction and mirrors inside the tube, to the ceiling.  Perfect for introducing daylight into bathrooms and closets (never will you step outside and realize you don't match again!)  Just another little tip from DCR Interiors to make your home or office more functional, energy efficient, and enjoyable!

Strategies in Entreprenuership, Collaboration in Design, and Synergies in Solar Power

Dana Redden of DCR Interiors, along with Gail Ried, author of the Idiots Guide to Low-Cost Start-Ups, Pamela George of Training by George, and Freddy Luster of Inman Solar, will be speaking at the the 2011 National Organization of Minority Architects [ NOMA ] Conference Friday, October 21st @ 10:50 AM on the theme of collaboration.  Collaboration is as critical as ever in the world of Architecture and Design.  Times like these, with the world in transition, are the times history has proven produce the most ingenuity and innovation.  Collaboration also takes place in the business world.  This is especially true of small business.  Most importantly, one must learn the techniques of collaboration, what makes team work - work.  As we touch on the strategies in entreprenuership, collaboration by design, and synergies in solar power, we would like to follow up with a few resources to help put the suggestions in our 2011 NOMA presentation into action.  Below are some programs and applications here to make collaboration easier:

      Google Docs

Being a browser-based application – the requirements to get up and running is very minimal. Storing your work online means they’re readily available anywhere with an internet connection. Check out the user examples of Google Docsto gain some ideas on how to use Google Docs.

      Stixy

Stixyis a flexible, online “bulletin board”/drawing board. There’s little structure and it’s up to you how you want to use it, so it’s a great whiteboarding application. Protonotes

Protonotesis a free annotation widget for your HTML prototypes. All you need to do is plop in a JavaScript onto your web page and voila – it just works. Usability testing, design critiquing, and quality-assurance testing are just some of the things that you can use Protonotes on. To get alerted when a new note has been posted, you can subscribe to your team’s notes RSS feed. You can export your data (your “protonotes”) as a CSV file which can be opened by spreadsheet applications like Google Spreadsheetsor Excel or even use your own MySQL database to store your data.

      ProjectPier

      Startrails and Rockstars

        Rockstars

Photographer Lincoln Harrison bares the Australian wintry outback to take these long exposure pictures that evoke a sense of oneness with the universe.  Said the artist:

"My favourite shot is the star trail with the purple and yellow background that I've called Dawn Fire.

‘I even left my torch in my other camera bag, so I had to climb down a steep rocky cliff in the dark to get this picture. But it was worth it. It's a personal" - DailyMail

Harrison's photos give viewers a front row seat of the cosmos.  Rock on!

      What a GREAT room!

Enjoy this guest post from Arcadian Home on a subject dear to a lot of our clients hearts: GREAT ROOMS!

Hi all! I’m Jennifer and I write for Arcadian Home Decor, a site that chronicles home decor trends around the world. I've been writing about home decor since graduating university and have loved it ever since. I'm addicted to patterned fabrics, Jonathan Adler, chaise lounges, old doors, milk glass jars, antiques, and chandeliers. The reason I'm a fan of DCR Interiors is because they're experts - what's better than perusing inspirational posts with advice straight from professionals? I may not be a professional, but I know a great room when I see one, and I'm excited to share some of them with you here.

Great rooms are multi-functional spaces in a home that are usually occupied by a living room, dining room and kitchen (or other fun zones like game rooms). Spacious and uncluttered, every detail in a great room counts, from the furniture right down to the table decor. Here are eight beautiful great rooms to inspire and impress. Marvelously modest Great Rooms

      Antique Style via

While this may be a smaller great room, there's no shortage of style and function here -- two back-to-back sitting areas and a bevy of beautiful antiques make this an ideal place to relax, read, entertain, and more. Shabby chic Great Room

      a designer + a contractor via

The high ceilings and antique armoire lend a rustic edge to this space, while the modern light fixtures and wall decor break up all that magnificent white. Inside and out Great Room

      HypeVilla via

This great room is especially exceptional, with a completely open-air dining room, comfortable living and dining areas decked out in wicker furniture, and beautiful exposed ceiling beams. Provence panache Great Room

      Home Bunch via

A massive stone fireplace takes center stage in this great room, and is surrounded by an eclectic array of chairs and sofas - the adjoining kitchen is also positioned to take full advantage of the roaring hearth. Family-friendly Great Room

      360 Vista Grande via

The layout of this great room is particularly interesting as it gives the illusion of winding through the main floor of this traditional home. However, the horizontal ceiling beams give the space flow and direction. A room with a view Great Room

      Hamptons Tuscan Villa via

And what a view it is! A seaside Hampton home with mammoth windows captures the impressive sights, while wide archways and an exposed second floor give the entire house an airy feel. Whimsy and charm Great Room

      The House Designers Blog via

With a kitchen just on the other side, this great room opens out onto sprawling hills and brings the beauty of outside in. The circle wall art along with the polka-dot furniture give the space some playfulness. Lovely and lakeside Great Room

      1nteriordesign.com via

There's no reason to add any colour to this stark white great room - the dazzling blue lake is awe-inspiring enough! Content provided by Arcadian Home Decor, a site that specializes in top quality home accessories at extremely affordable prices. Come visit us today!

      Taking the Planet for Granite

Granite counter tops, all the rage for now more than a decade, have quite an interesting back story.  Although the beauty of nature is evoked by the delicate swirls and unique patterns in Granite, the process behind getting the igneous rock out of the ground, and on your counter top is far from environmentally friendly.  According to treehugger.com:

But granite is found all over the world, and it is cheaper to dig it out in India and Brazil. The environmental standards are not quite as high either; in the Bangalore district, one study shows that 16% of the workers have dust an water related diseases like tuberculosis, and the air surrounding quarries is hazy with dust. But the local real estate is cheap, as is labour. (more at theBBC)

Having a sustainable approach to design involves looking at all factors related to maintaining a healthy planet, including the effect on the people and wildlife that inhabit it.  DCR Interiors investigates these and other product components to assure all aesthetics are also responsible, helping our clients make informed decisions.  We believe good design has a soul, a harmonizing balance that brings joy to its inhabitants.  When planning your next renovation or remodel, let us help you create something beautiful on the outside and the inside.
